Trio Ostinato is scored for the unusual combination of two violins and bass. Written between 2003 and 2004, this work gets its title from my consistent use of repeated rhythmic patterns, or ostinatos, throughout each of the movements. Once the ostinato is grooving, the three musicians take turns playing freely-flowing melodies. The first movement moves at a walking pace but the sweeping melodies arc high above the disjunct ostinato. The middle movement is hauntingly beautiful, cast in a slow and cantabile 7/8 meter. Closing the work is a quick polymetric celebration, combining ideas in 5/8, 7/8, 3/4, and 3/2.

This work was premiered at the Sarasota Music Festival on June 18, 2004. The recording below is of Shannon Thomas and Emily Ondracek, violins, and Ted Botsford, bass.

   Duration: ca. 8'
