Wildcat Rock was commissioned by the Henderson County Public School Orchestra Programs to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Berrian All-County Festival.

Wildcat Rock is a hiking trail viewpoint in northeast Henderson County, North Carolina, located near Bearwallow Mountain. Hikers who brave the strenous journey there are treated to sweeping vistas of the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains. This piece is a celebration of the natural beauty and fiddling traditions of this part of the United States. The first half is broad and lyrical, inspired by Appalachian folk ballads. A longing melody is passed around the orchestra, and the music builds towards a lush and cinematic climax. The music then immediately switches gears into a faster bluegrass-inspired style. Inspired by Appalachian fiddle music, the raucous energy builds all the way to the end.

As this piece was written for an honor orchestra festival that combines its middle and high school honor orchestras, the parts are grade flexible. "A" parts are grade 4 and "B" parts are grade 2. The piece will work if performed in any combination of these parts.

Grade 2/4 flexible
